Long Billed Spearfish

A close cousin of the white marlin, the spear fish is a common catch in the Canarian waters, although when one is boated, many anglers think it's just a strange looking white marlin. The longbill spearfish, can be distinguished from its cousin by the sleek, slender body and the slightly higher dorsal that ends in a pointed tip rather than the rounded tip of the white. They are generally much thinner than the white and a biologist once described the longbill spearfish as a sailfish with a blue marlin dorsal fin.

Most spearfish are on the small side weighing 30 to 50 pounds and measuring up to 60 inches. They do get larger and the record fish weighed 61 pounds, spearfish feed on or near the surface on flying fish, squid, mackerel, and any other small shoaling fish.
